"public transport does not look a viable option" - I assume many people use the once-a-day shuttle run by Leolandia, setting off at 9 am "Terminal SAB" just on the east side of Bergamo Railway Station, and returning from Leolandia at 6 pm (€10 return trip, free for small children 89 cm and below ).
